Adaption of cheap Genius stereo speaker sets for multispeaker prototyping: I've done quite an amount of prototyping using components from cheap speaker
systems - some are a little odd and some whimsical - but why not? Here are a few pics...
First of all the 'monitors' I chopped up for parts: the Genius SP-S110
...... and the now discontinued Genius SP-Q06S
(a pity -
the boxes were bigger and made nice
project boxes complete with amp and speaker
driver
for circuit bends).
Both models claim 100 Watts PMPO. Extremely unlikely :--)
4 channel 'near field' setup using Genius speaker drivers. The idea here is to find a way to use low powered speakers to mockup up surround setups. Output low so.... bring the speaker closer! Also might make sense
for a small spaces.
Stand alone stereo amps - speaker driver is removed and speaker
connection
cables from board are
soldered to speaker connectors.
Speaker driver connectors. Speaker flex has crocodile connectors on
speaker end (not shown here).
Input cable is cut short and connected to rca connectors.
My custom 5.1 amplifier!

3 x Stereo Genius amps and power supplies built into a lunch box.
Just suitable for prototyping - outputs are not exactly matched - these are not high
end amps.
The internal wiring in these amps must have the world's lowest strand count!
Just a couple of copper filaments in each cable. Disconnect one strand and you get a
noticeable db drop! Possibly explains the non matched outputs (although there are
likely to be a number of other reasons!).
Inside....
Cardboard tube as resonator. The tube provides a way of 'shaping'
the sound of the driver by giving control over volume and colouration.
A close up showing crocodile connectors and holes drilled in tube (just
to the right of the speaker) to 'tune' the tube.
And some of those tubes in action as part of Drawing Machine.
